CHAIRMAN'S CORNER

Chairman's Corner - Spring 2018

The Durbac AGM was held on 19 September 2018. The first thanks goes to Herman Crause our outgoing chairman and the outgoing committee. Herman led the club with the highest of standards and it was a complete privilege to work with him. He has left big shoes to fill but has made sure that the right structures are in place for the club to grow from strength to strength. To the rest of the outgoing committee members thank you so much for your support, effort and time. Thank you Herman and see you on the road and trail.

In terms of the AGM itself it ran off without any hitches. The club posted a good profit considering provisions needed to be made for replacing a Gazebo and the development of a Website. A conservative 2019 budget was approved without any issues and I'd like to thank Robin Tooth for his meticulous management of our finances. A fees increase of R20 for 2019 [excluding any ASA license fee adjustment] was also accepted.

One key aspect of the AGM is that the club is growing at an incredible rate [up to approximately 650 members], this points to an ever growing running community as well as how Durbac positions itself  as an attractive option to be a part of. As a result of the growth two key decisions where made at the AGM:

  1. We will be investigating the option to appoint a part time administrator. This is to deal with a range of tasks from member communications to management of the social portfolios.
  2. The restructuring of our road captain team. Instead of have having two Captains (one men's and one lady’s) we will have one Captain - with Luzanne Le Roux being elected as Club Captain - supported by two vice captains and a structured Captains Team. By structured I mean that each Captains Team member will have a sub portfolio for which they are responsibly for. As a growing club this is an important aspect to ensure that a volunteers only club can scale to event greater heights and to also recognise that we live in a modern world where your role is not predetermined by race or gender.
To the new members of the committee, members continuing and owners of club portfolios for 2019 I'd like to thank you for putting your hands up to perform a crucial function which without we would cease to exist.

And finally I'd like to thank all of those who attended. In all my years at Durbac it was the best attended AGM.

Oh yes, please take the time to check out our new website at www.durbac.org.za.

TRAIL CAPTAIN'S CORNER

It is quite a thing – these Member of the Month awards held at Kloppers. They do go all out to make us feel special and to create a wonderful evening. Reps from all the brands were there – offering both advice and prizes. New Balance, Falke, Brooks, Adidas, USN, Asics, Salomon, Hi-Tec, Havaianas, Second Skin, InPlus Africa -  a huge shout-out to you for coming to the party in a big way! Kloppers themselves treated us with enough snacks and drinks to make it a truly festive occasion. A big thanks as well to the whole of Durbac – we packed more than a 100 of us into Kloppers for the funnest of evenings!

And what did the hosts, The Trail Team do? Certainly the unexpected, even for us… When our fearless Hakaka leader Anton explained what we had to do, we all thought it was a bit of a joke. But no – he dashed in-between the award winners, the rest of the committee in close pursuit, all of us slapping bums the like I had not seen since my Grade 7 days when the whole class lined up outside the principal’s office. It certainly was an Oerah (apparently “cheers” in Russian) moment. Even the Trump tweeted that this was just the “best ever event”, and certainly not “fake news”. Can this ever be repeated, can this ever be topped? As the fairy tales say – watch this space!

The rest of the trail year promises more action that when the Russians meddle in other countries elections! (Oerah!). There is the final of the World Cup of Trail – the Golden Series being run at The Otter. What a scoop for South African trail to host this prestigious final, with all the big names in trail running there (Herman and myself excluded. Apparently they are referring to a different “big”). Other stand-out races are the Cederberg and Drylands Traverse, and the epic UTCT at the end of the year.

Pack runs are also a lot more frequent. Expect a cooler box of beers (and some Sterries), feta, whisky, lots of laughs, some falls, and just a bit of climbing on these adventures. And anyone can come and join – being a pack run we all run together. And stop and take photos together. It is not a race, but a social event. With the turn-out we’re getting at these runs (the last had more than 60 runners!) it means we can split into enough groups to cater for everyone’s ability. From the fit and long (but never fast) bokkies to the casual weekend goat to the “I’d rather guard the beers than run” wise goat , there is a group for everyone! There really isn’t a better time to come and have fun on the beautiful trails in our splendid nature!
